Turn it into a real voyage of discovery by rocking out to some music from the chosen country while you cook and learning a few words or phrases from the local lingo. Your kids will be yelling out, “Irasshaimase! Osushi wa ikaga desu ka? (Welcome! Would you like some sushi?) to the next unsuspecting kitchen visitor before you know it.


Not all technology is online, however. Kitchen tech has come huge distances in recent years and can be used to your advantage to engage kids in a safe and effective way. For example, if you own a good quality slow cooker, rice cooker, air fryer or other kitchen gadgets, you can switch from the stovetop to the countertop and let your kids work the controls for a satisfying dopamine buzz of achievement with no mess or fuss. It’s also a chance to introduce them to some of the basic science and chemistry of cooking. While it might feel a bit like cheating, there’s real value in educating children about different methods of cooking and understanding how these handy cooking appliances work. Especially for small kids, the simple act of popping some ingredients into a machine a pressing a few buttons can provide them with a gratifying sense of accomplishment.



Chemistry: Where Mistakes Are Delicious (Sometimes)
