Reviving Romance - Best Valentine’s Day Gifts & Dinner Ideas for 2026
The waiters are immaculately dressed in crisp black-and-white uniforms that appear to have recently been fished out of a vat of starch. The tables are set with gorgeous china, gleaming cutlery and glassware that glistens in the warm, dim light, as seductive Bossa Nova tunes waft gently from the barely visible speakers.
At most of the tables, sit couples, well-appointed in their finest threads, ostensibly there for a romantic evening of gourmet delights, a glass or two of superb wine and some special time together. And what are they doing…?
Staring at their phones.
We’ve all seen it. From fine dining through to Maccas. At the beach, the picnic ground, the park or the pub, couples more interested in the contents of their Insta feeds than each other. It doesn’t end there: a recent study shows that ten per cent of Australians regularly check their phones during...ahem... the more intimate portion of the evening1.
Even before date night, it seems that swiping right has replaced wooing, while a mind-blowing sixteen per cent of Australians are turning to AI companions to fulfil their romantic needs in place of a real, live human2.
From whichever angle you view, it appears that romance is on a steep decline into irrelevance. However, we’re not content to sit and watch as centuries of accumulated courtship rituals fall by the wayside. With everyone’s favourite “Day of Love” almost here, it’s the perfect time to ponder how we can make Valentine’s Day 2026 a time to rediscover and revive the Art of Romance.
How Can You Make This Valentine's Day Special?
For all the commercial hype, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to step out of the day-to-day schedule and focus on the emotional connection between you and your partner. Whether you’ve just started dating or you’ve been married for 35 years, it’s a time to indulge yourselves in a dose of old-school romance and, hopefully, strengthen your affectionate bond.
However, the pressure to create an ostentatiously elaborate production can be overwhelming. The perceived need to express your love through a whiz-bang event can kill your motivation and leave you throwing together half-baked plans at the last minute.
So, this year, it pays to focus on quality over quantity and keep the formula simple. The perfect Valentine’s Day consists of two essential elements:
- Great Food
- A Thoughtful Gift
Get these two elements right, and you’ll achieve your goal just as emphatically as a scenic twilight helicopter ride of the city.
Let’s see how we can nail each of these crucial pieces of the amorous puzzle.
Part 1: How To Make The Perfect Romantic Valentine’s Day Dinner
Whether you’re a traditional Aussie bloke looking to woo your lass, a lady who wants to spoil her man, or you and your partner identify somewhere else on the gender continuum, everyone can and should get their aprons on and start whipping up a Valentine’s feast.
Not everyone is a virtuoso in the kitchen. For the mere mortals amongst us that lie somewhere on the spectrum from toast-burner to competent home cook, the key is to stay within your capability lanes. Resist the urge to convince your beloved that you can cook like a MasterChef contestant and keep things simple and elegant. This is not Olympic gymnastics, and you don’t get bonus points for extreme degrees of difficulty. On the contrary, reach beyond your standard, and you’re more likely to end up with a messy disaster that utterly ruins the amorous vibe.
So What Actually Makes a Meal Romantic?
1. Lightness beats indulgence
Bloating, acid reflux, and, heaven forfend, a bout of gas, are surefire ingredients thatl kill your post-dinner plans. To give your night the best chance of proceeding as planned, avoid heavy, overly rich foods. Opt for lighter, fresher options that will keep you feeling the same way.
That also means being a little restrained with ingredients that, how do we put this delicately, linger in the olfactory department. Yes, garlic is delicious. Yes, it belongs in many great dishes. However, if you’re hoping the night might extend beyond dessert, this probably isn’t the moment to go all-in on a four-clove situation and destroy the developing mood.
2. Familiar, done well, beats impressive but stressful
Sometimes, it pays to play the percentages. There’s a time and place for risk-taking, but when you’re trying to wow your significant other, there’s very little romance in sweating through a recipe you’ve never cooked before, then stressing about whether it’s turned out the way you imagined.
Choose dishes you understand and can cook without constantly checking instructions. When you’re relaxed, the energy shifts. Conversation flows more easily. Mistakes don’t feel catastrophic.
3. Texture matters
Anyone who’s been in a relationship for a while knows that sometimes you have to mix things up a little bit to keep it fresh. Similarly, a successful romantic meal requires a healthy dose of contrast and variety.
Something soft. Something crisp. Something warm. Something fresh. These small sensory variations keep the meal interesting without resorting to loud flavours or gastronomic gimmicks.
4. Timing is part of the recipe
Rushing kills romance. So does waiting too long between courses.
A well-timed meal has a gentle pace to it. Enough space to talk. Enough flow that no one checks the clock (or their infernal phone!). This is where planning matters more than complexity.
Have things ready. Know what can be prepped earlier. Leave yourself room to be present with your paramour, rather than constantly jumping up and down from the table and killing the flow of the evening.
Now that we’ve established some ground rules, it’s time to get cooking!
3 Guaranteed Valentine’s Day Hit Recipes
1. Slow Cooker Red Wine & Thyme Beef
Feeling under pressure to produce the perfect meal, short on time due to work or other commitments? If so, this recipe is for you. The beauty of preparing food in a slow cooker is that you can throw all the ingredients together before you leave for work in the morning, set it and forget it, and a mouthwatering meal will be ready right when you need it.
Serves: 2-3 (romantic portions, not footy-night with the boys portions)
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 6–8 hours on low
Ingredients
- 600 g of beef chuck or blade steak, cut into large chunks
- 1 tbsp of olive oil
- 2 shallots, finely sliced
- carrots, cut into thick rounds
- 2 tbsp of tomato paste
- 250 ml of dry red wine
- 250 ml of beef stock
- 2 tsp of fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried)
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method
- Season the raw beef generously with salt and pepper. Set your GreenPan Slow Cooker to sear mode, add the olive oil and when hot, gently brown the beef on all sides.
- Remove the beef, and set it aside. Add the shallots and carrots, and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
- Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute.
- Pour in the red wine, scraping up any sticky bits from the pan with a silicone spatula or spoon. Let it simmer for 2 minutes, then add the beef stock.
- Return the beef to the slow cooker. Add thyme and bay leaf.
- Cook on low for 6–8 hours, until the beef is meltingly tender.
How to Serve
Keep portions modest. Serve over soft polenta, mashed cauliflower, or a small scoop of buttery mash. Add something green on the side.
2. Ginger, Soy & Mushroom Rice Cooker Bowl
This vegan-friendly dish hits all the classic Asian notes, making it utterly satisfying without being heavy. We’ve taken out the garlic to ensure that close quarters don’t turn into deal breakers.
Serves: 2
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30-40 minutes
Ingredients
- 180 g of jasmine rice (about 1 cup uncooked)
- 300 ml of vegetable stock
- 2 cm piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- 1½ tbsp of soy sauce
- 1 tsp of sesame oil
- 150 g of mushrooms, sliced. We recommend shiitake, oyster, king oyster or other Asian mushrooms of your choice for a satisfying hit of umami. However, you can substitute button, crimini, portobello, porcini, or Swiss brown if more convenient or preferred.
- 2 spring onions, finely sliced
- Fresh coriander or chives, to finish
- Lime wedges, to serve
Method
- Rinse the rice until the water runs mostly clear.
- Add the rice to the non-stick, non-toxic rice cooker along with the vegetable stock, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Stir gently.
- Start the rice cooker.
- About 10 minutes before the rice is done, quickly open the lid and scatter the mushrooms over the top. Close the lid and continue cooking.
- Once finished, let it rest for 5 minutes, then fluff gently with a fork.
How to Serve
Spoon into shallow bowls. Finish with spring onions, fresh herbs, and a squeeze of lime. It’s light, aromatic, and deeply satisfying without knocking the wind out of the evening. Serve with a side of Asian greens lightly sauteed with a drop of sesame oil and a dash of mirin.
3. Strawberry Champagne Ice Cream
Dessert can be the highlight of the night, the crescendo of the meal and the segue into the next phase of your plans, wherever that takes you. It might be frozen, but this superbly elegant, classy dessert will have the object of your affections melting.
Serves: 2-4
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- 250 g of fresh strawberries, hulled (arguably the second most fun thing you can do in the kitchen on Valentine’s Day)
- 80 g of caster sugar
- 200 ml of thickened cream
- 100 ml of full-cream milk
- 60 ml of champagne or prosecco
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract
Method
- Blend the strawberries and sugar until very smooth. Taste and adjust the sweetness if required. You should aim for fresh and light, not excessively sugary.
- Stir through the cream, milk, champagne, and vanilla until fully combined.
- Chill the mixture in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
- Pour into the Frost home ice-cream maker and churn on ice cream mode until set.
- Freeze for 30–60 minutes for a firmer scoop.
How to Serve
We think this ice cream works best with just a few fresh chopped berries sprinkled over the top. If you’re feeling wild and crazy, you could whip up a raspberry coulis for added romance points.
